Silence in a network is not safety

There’s an old assumption in cybersecurity: no news is good news. No incidents reported means the environment is secure. No alerts means the controls are working. No breaches means the investment is justified.

But silence in a network is not the same as safety. It might mean nothing is happening. Or it might mean nothing is being seen. The difference between those two things is everything, and most security programmes are not built to tell them apart.

We have built entire reporting cultures around counting what we find. We have built almost nothing around measuring what we cannot see.

So the board hears three incidents and calls it a good quarter, while somewhere in the environment something has been moving quietly for weeks. Not because the team failed. Because the question was never asked.

Security does not fail loudly. It fails in the blind spots everyone agreed not to look at.
